Dental TMJ disorder can be a very frustrating problem. It can cause a number of symptoms that can have a negative impact on your life. Unfortunately treatment of TMJ disorder never really cures the problem, it just provides relief from the symptoms that are affecting your life. But relief from pain is no relief and if done regularly and correctly the affects of TMJ therapy can be long lasting. Treatment should begin by a patient finding an experienced TMJ dentist who can treat the disease.

Dental TMJ is a disorder affecting the joints where your lower jaw meets your skull. These are called the Temporomandibular joints, TMJ for short. So when you just say TMJ you are really just talking about the joints, TMJD or TMD refers to the problems caused by the joints in some people. The most common TMJ symptom is jaw pain. This is most often just a general soreness, not acute pain. Jaw popping or jaw clicking when opening and closing the mouth are other symptoms that can quickly cause a person distress.

Dental TMJ is also associated with other medical problems. These problems include Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, Mitral Valve Prolapse and nasal allergies as well as vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Teeth often become sensitive to hot and cold due to tooth grinding. The combination of many of these factors can cause problems sleeping as well as chronic discomfort. So TMD is not something to be taken lightly. If you think you might have TMJ disorder, schedule a dental examination with a TMJ dentist as soon as you can.
