Most denture teeth are made out of specially processed acrylic. Acrylic is a plastic resin that can be colored and shaped to look very much like natural human teeth. The resin also chemically bonds to the pink denture acrylic so that these plastic teeth rarely break off of the pink base. Because they're plastic, they also absorb the forces of chewing and act as a sort of shock absorber which helps reduce jaw bone loss under the dentures.

          Years ago, denture teeth were made out of tooth colored porcelain. Dental porcelain is very beautiful and create the natural look of a real smile. However, porcelain does not bond to plastic and a specially designed metal hook has to be processed in the back of the porcelain in order to hold the porcelain onto the pink acrylic resin. It is uncommon today to see complete dentures constructed with porcelain teeth.

          Denture teeth should look natural and blend into the smile so that no one really knows that the patient doesn't have natural teeth. Teeth come in various lengths and widths and choosing the best arrangement is both and art and science. The smile should fit between the corners of the lips and when the patient smiles, a good portion of the upper teeth should be seen in the smile. Making beautiful dentures is an art and it takes some time to create really nice ones that look great and chew well.
