In most cases, a dentures adhesive is not usually needed to keep a good set of complete dentures from coming loose. A well designed set of plates should fit without problems but some denture wearers prefer to use products, such as Fixodent, to help keep their dentures in place. Dentures always become loose with time because the jaw bone naturally changes and melts away after teeth have been removed. However, the old plates keep their original shapes and become loose. Unfortunately, many patients refuse to pay for the expense of having a regular dentures reline to help fit the changing bone structure.
In some patients, a dentures adhesive can significantly improve the patient's biting force and over all comfort wearing the dentures. However, many patients do not like taste and some prefer not to use anything at all. It's a good idea to start out with a small amount of adhesive the first time you use it and begin adding more and more with subsequent applications until you are comfortable with the amount applied.
A dentures adhesive can also be very useful for those patients with dry mouths. Unfortunately, a we age there is a natural decrease in the amount of saliva that is made. Saliva is needed for help create a seal between a denture and the gums. While the material is not harmful if swallowed, overuse can cause tissue damage. The material can also leave residues on the gums after removal of your dentures. Of course, this residue should be brushed off.
