A good dentures repair restores an old damaged plate to it's original shape. Plates are carefully made to fit the exact shape of the soft tissues underneath them. The better the fit, the better the plate will stay in and the less problems the dentures wearer will have. They also function better because there's less movement while the patient chews. It is not a bad idea to consider a dentures reline after a significant repair to help strengthen the plastic support.
A dentures repair involves either fixing the pink acrylic base or replacing a broken or missing dentures tooth. The false tooth can be made of plastic or porcelain. Most dentists prefer plastic teeth because a plastic teeth chemically bond and stick to the pink acrylic base. There's less chance that it will break off compared to porcelain teeth. A porcelain tooth is held in by a metal tab on the back. The acrylic locks onto the metal tab. Unfortunately, there is no chemical bond with porcelain teeth and they tend to break off much more commonly.
The most common dentures repair is fixing a cracked pink acrylic base. It's not unusual for a patient to split a plate in half. Some dentists use metal mess or plate inside a denture to strengthen it. Restoring an old broken plate can be tricky and trying to mend it at home can screw it up! Having to buy a brand new plate because of a screw up is not a good thing, especially if you are on a fixed income.
