As with many other fields, digital technology has revolutionized Dentistry, giving us the ability to take a digital x-ray. It was first created by Fuji Photo Film Co. in 1983, and was named Computed Radiography. It was introduced into dentistry in France in the late 1980's and while it might have been slow to take off, its future in the fields is certain. This is due to the fact that technology is still increasing at an exponential rate, and will give dentist even more advantages over conventional x-ray systems.
Digital x-ray provides dentists with a fair number of advantages. If you've ever had conventional x-rays done at the dentist you know that it takes some time to get the results back. This can be made even worse if the x-ray was done perfectly. There are any number of variables in the process, from the placement of the x-ray to the film quality to the developer, which has even more variables involved. Proper maintenance and training lessens the chances of one of these variables causing problems but anything can happen. With digital the need for a darkroom, developer machine and chemicals is eliminated, making the results virtually instantaneous!
Digital x-ray technology also allows the picture to be taken with the use of around one-tenth less radiation than conventional x-rays. But the single greatest advantage is that it allows for superior diagnosis capability. Digital can be enhanced instantaneously, allowing the dentist to magnify, alter the contrast on any possible problem. This allows for a speedier and more thorough diagnose than conventional x-rays can provide.
The Atlanta Dental Group PC uses the Schick digital x-ray system, primarily for diagnostics on root canal treatment. The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being and you are welcome to join our family of patients.
