Fixed partial dentures is just another term for a dental bridge or an implant supported bridge. After tooth removal the rest of the teeth can shift out of place and create serious problems, a bridge helps prevent this from happening. If only one tooth is missing it is possible to get a dental implant, but when more teeth are missing solutions are limited. The implant becomes is as much like a real tooth as you can get, whereas the bridge relies on surrounding teeth for support.

         Bridges are the simplest form of fixed partial dentures. These usually cover two teeth, one tooth in front of the missing tooth and one tooth behind the missing tooth. These two teeth are prepared by reducing them in miniature and crowns are made to cover each of the teeth. A false crown is then attached to the other two crowns. When the crowns are attached, the missing tooth will be effectively replaced by the middle crown.

        Bridge implants are a more advanced form of fixed partial dentures. They work much the same way bridges do but use dental implants as the anchors for the false crowns. This can be particularly useful when surrounding teeth are not completely healthy and may not hold up to the pressures that can be applied on a standard bridge.
