Fluoride

fluoride

Fluoride is a chemical that is used to help prevent tooth decay. In many cities it is added to the water in order to help prevent such cavities. This has caused some controversy over the years but the degree to which it can help prevent cavities makes it extremely beneficial to your oral health. But this will only have an effect if ingested while the teeth are forming, which, is between birth and the age of 8. After the all the teeth are formed it will only have an effect if used in toothpaste, which, must be used every day.

Fluoride works because it helps strengthen the tooth enamel. This helps prevent dental decay, which, is caused by acids being released onto the tooth by bacteria in the form of plaque. When it is ingested while a tooth is being formed it helps strengthen the tooth as it forms. After the teeth has formed it acts merely as a protecting layer that needs to be replenished. It's like have a thick layer of armor plating on a vehicle rather than a thin layer of steel that can rust and disappear. Wouldn't you much rather have the armor plating?

Fluoride does have some problems though. Excessive ingestion while the teeth are being formed can cause a problem known as fluorosis. Dental fluorosis in child shows up as a slight discoloration of the teeth. Many people have used this as an argument that the chemical is a health hazard but it has no proven health effect, just a slight cosmetic problem with the teeth. It is also naturally occurring in many water supplies in higher concentrations than what is added to the water supply in may cities.
