A front tooth root canal is very common since these teeth often get hit and die. This is especially true with patients who have buck teeth that stick out. After getting hit a tooth often turns dark and a dark tooth is a sign that there has been bleeding inside the tooth. In most cases, a dark tooth needs a root canal.
A front tooth root canal is easy to do because there is usually only one canal in these teeth and they are easily reached because of their position in the front of the mouth. Many dentists finish these root canals in one short visit. Front teeth normally have very straight canals which are significantly easier to work on compared to the commonly curved canals of back teeth. Modern root canal techniques use rotary mechanical equipment that works ideally when there is very little bending.
Unfortunately, a dark color often remains after a front tooth root canal and because anterior teeth are part of a beautiful smile, many patients choose to have cosmetic dental work done. In most cases, a porcelain crown or porcelain veneer is constructed to mask the dark color and return a patient's smile back to normal. Since front teeth are thin and can snap apart, most dentists place a post and core to strengthen the tooth before a crown is placed.
