gingiva

There are two types of gingiva, attached and vestibular. Most people just call them both their " gums " but there are some important differences. Healthy gingival tissue is pink and thick. Inflammation can cause the gums to swell and get red and this is a sure sign that you should seek professional dental help. It is very important to keep your gums clean and healthy as part of a long term strategy to keep your teeth for a lifetime.

Attached gingiva surrounds the collars of the tooth crowns. It's tough and doesn't move at all. It's purpose is to keep food from getting into the underlying bone and resist recession during chewing. If the zone of attached gingiva is insufficient, gum recession can occur. This can often be prevented with a gum graft to increase this band of protective tissue. If there is an excess of tissue, then a gingivectomy or gingivoplasty may be indicated for preventative or cosmetic reasons.

Vestibular gingiva moves and has lots of visible blood vessels within the tissue. Each frenum is contained within the vestibular tissue. As you speak, eat or move your mouth in any way, this vestibular tissue moves along with the motion of the lips and cheeks. Occasionally, a frenum pulls to strongly and can cause recession. A frenectomy may then be indicated to prevent future harm to the teeth and supporting gums.

All gingiva is composed of mucous membrane which is a tissue that lines the mouth, nose and throat. It is important to keep all of these structures clean and healthy.
