Gingival Cyst

gingival cyst

A gingival cyst is a cyst that develops on the gums of a persons' mouth. In adults, periodontal disease can cause a gingival pocket to grow and this can often form a cyst. They can even be the result of viral infections. Cysts can even form in newborn babies. They're usually painless but often frustrating because of the swelling.

A gingival cyst in a newborn baby, also called dental lamina cyst in infants, can present as small diameter cysts on the gums varying in color from white to yellow. They are not harmful and these cysts usually break open by themselves. This can happen a few days after birth or in some cases, several months later. Oral surgery can be done to open the cysts but this generally proves unnecessary.

A gingival cyst in an adult is quite a different thing. These cysts are rare so there have been only a limited number of studies. They tend to occur in the area of the premolars and canines and often have a bluish color. They tend not to grow over 1 cm in diameter and can be removed surgically. Once they're removed, they generally show no tendency to reoccur.
