Gingival Disease

gingival disease

Gingival disease is a disease affecting the gums since the word, gingiva, is another term for the gums in the mouth. There are a number of different types of gum problems but by far the most common is the gum disease called gingivitis. It is most often caused by a simple lack or oral hygiene, especially gum care. The more advanced form of this disease is called periodontitis. But there are other gingival diseases, such as; gingival fibromatosis and ginigval hyperplasia that can adversely effect your health.

The best way to prevent a gingival disease is good oral hygiene. Gum care is often overlooked in favor of good tooth care when it comes to oral hygiene but the truth is that the gums are extremely important and lack of gum care can have serious repercussions. Proper gum care involves lightly brushing the gums as well as properly flossing. If these things are not done correctly, if too much pressure is applied, then it can actually cause damage to the gums. A receding gum line is one symptom of over enthusiastic gum care.

Sometimes it is just not possible to prevent a gingival disease. Gingival hyperplasia is most often caused be certain medications and many leukemia patients get leukemic gingivitis. Some people are genetically predisposed to certain disorders and even good oral hygiene cannot always prevent symptoms from presenting. This is why it is important to make regular visits to your dentist. Your dentist will be able to spot the signs of such diseases and help you prevent a worsening of the condition.
