Gingival hyperplasia is excessive over-growth of the gum tissue surrounding teeth. The gingiva can grow so much that it literally surrounds and often covers the teeth. This growth is usually irregular and may or may not be associated bleeding. Gingivitis also causes swelling of the gums but not to the extent seen in this condition and it does so for different reasons. Patients with gingivitis almost always have excessive bleeding gums.
Gingival hyperplasia has several causes and patients should be carefully evaluated to determine the origin of the problem. It is most commonly a side effect of several different types of medications including dilantin, cyclosporines, calcium channel blockers and even at times, birth control pills. More seriously, the condition can also be a sign of leukemia and some blood dyscrasias. It makes sense to investigate and identify the cause by visiting both a dentist and physician.
Regardless of the cause of gingival hyperplasia, this excessive gum tissue is often an ugly site so most patients want the problem treated. The treatment is the removal of the excessive gum tissue with a procedure called gingivectomy. Gingivoplasty is the shaping of the gum surface and is often combined with gingivectomy. It is not unusual for a patient to have this periodontal surgery done several times so it is very important that the cause be determined to avoid the necessity of repeating the surgery.
