Gingivectomy

gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is the removal of excess gums. The word comes from gingiva meaning gums and -ectomy meaning cutting away. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons, as a treatment for periodontal disease, or to remove gums which have overgrown from prescription medications. When it is done to improve a gummy smile, it is called cosmetic gum contouring. This surgery can dramatically improve someone's smile. Gingivoplasty is a similar procedure used to shape and contour the surface of the gums, not cut away tissue.

A gingivectomy may be required when chronic periodontal disease causes the gum tissues to thicken and remain permanently excessive. Periodontal disease inflames and swells the gums. If the underlying bone is healthy, this excess of gums can create a periodontal pocket that traps food and lead to periodontal disease and possibly tooth decay. Some medications such as Dilantin for epilepsy and Beta Blockers for high blood pressure can cause excessive gum growth. If a patient continues to take these prescription medications, the procedure must be done several times over several years. It is always a good idea to discuss alternative medications with your physician.

In the gingivectomy surgery, the gum removal is done with an electrical knife that cuts and prevents excessive bleeding during the procedure. Less often a surgical scalpel is used. All of the excessive gum tissue over the crown is removed and cut away all the way to the neck of the tooth. In most cases, the surface of the remaining gum tissues have to be smoothed and contoured to look natural. In most cases, the procedure takes less than an hour and is done in the dental office.
