The most common gingivitis antibiotic is probably Tetracycline. Tetracycline concentrates in the gingival fluid so that it is extremely effective in killing the bacteria living in or on the gums. Unfortunately, Tetracycline cause teeth that are forming to turn yellow so many physicians and dentists no longer prescribe it. However, it does not affect adult fully formed teeth and can be prescribed for teenagers and adults without any tooth color changes. It is generally prescribed in 500 milligram capsules.
Another
gingivitis antibiotic is called Doxycline. However,
it is really a Tetracycline derivative. Doxycline can be mixed
with a gel and placed into periodontal pockets to assist in removing
the bacteria that cause these defects. Arestin is a precription
medication in the form of a pill that a patient can take every
day. It contains a very very low dose of doxycline that does not
have very much bacteria killing power but does prevent destructive
enzymes in the gums from breaking down the gingival tissues. Doxycycline
is also used to treat other bacterial infections such as acne,
pneumonia, lyme disease, STDs, anthrax and malaria.
Chlorhexidine is a gingivitis antibiotic and the main ingredient is Peridex oral rinse. Peridex is a prescription mouthwash used as part of a periodontal patient's routine home care. The rinse is swished around in the mouth and then spit out. It works great but has the bad tendency to turn dental placque black which most patients consider unacceptable. Periochip is tiny piece of gelatin impregnated with chlorhexidine that is placed underneath the gum tissues after professional scaling and root planing.
