Untreated gingivitis disease can progress to severe periodontal disease and eventual tooth loss. The word beginning gingi- comes from the word gingiva meaning gums and the word ending -itis means inflammation. Gingivitis means inflamed gums.
Gums and skin prevent bacteria from getting inside the body. Inflamed gums with gingivitis disease bleed easily, swell and look red. This inflammation allows invading bacteria to successfully enter the body and the bacteria release toxins that irritate the gums further. Over time the gums tissues and supporting bone are destroyed causing loose teeth that often have to be extracted.
Chronic inflammation is a really bad thing and is perhaps the cause of many autoimmune diseases. Untreated gingivitis disease can progress to periodontal disease which has been implicated in contributing to heart attacks and strokes.
Gingivitis disease is reversible with professional dental care and good oral home care. Treatment begins with a thorough cleaning and very often scaling and root planing to remove bacteria infested calculus.
