There may not be any gingivitis symptom in the early stages of gum inflammation. It is not uncommon to see a swollen gum, red puffy gums and/or tender gums without any dental pain. The inflammation is caused by dental plaque irritating the gum tissues and is worse in patients having badly aligned teeth. Gingival inflammation is seen more often in patients with diabetes, pregnancy and medical problems. Failure to visit the dentist regularly along with poor oral home care almost always results in problems.
The gingivitis symptom that bothers patients the most is bleeding gums. The gums can bleed spontaneously but most patients say it's the worst when they brush their teeth. It grosses them out to see blood on their toothbrushes! However, there are a number of other things that gum inflammation can cause.
If gingivitis continues untreated, an upsetting gingivitis symptom is a bad taste in the mouth and/or bad breath. It comes from the breakdown of the blood released into the mouth by swollen bleeding gums. In severe cases, patients also have a salty taste from pus oozing out of the unhealthy gums.
