A gold filling is no longer a common sight. Where gold was once highly valued for its aesthetic appearance it has lost much of its appeal in modern society. Gold was once, and still is, a great material for dentistry because it is easily malleable, a big plus, when working in closed places like the human mouth. Gold is also hypo-allergenic and will wear slowly rather than break suddenly.
A gold filling is now even less common than a gold crown. Porcelain crowns have replaced them just as white fillings of composite have replaced gold. White fillings have advanced to the point where they are very easy to apply, are well priced and blend in with the tooth so perfectly that only a dentist would be able to tell that any work has been done.
A gold filling is actually only part gold. Dentists use an alloy that is made partly from gold and is in fact only about 75 percent gold. Gold inlays are a little more common than fillings made of gold. These generally take two appointments to complete so often a temporary filling is used.
