Gum Abscess

gum abcess

A gum abcess is found in the gums and not in the bone. It's caused by active and usually untreated periodontal disease. If it's left untreated, it can destroy the underlying bone. It can create a crater or a hole in the bone around the teeth and the problem only gets worse. You should see a dentist as soon as possible to have it treated.

A tooth abscess is a different type of problem. It comes from a dead tooth that gets infected at the tips of its roots. The dental infection starts inside the jaw bone and works itself out into the gums. A gum abcess can form around a living tooth and does not have to involve the bone around the tooth. It starts in the gums and can work itself into the bone. This is the opposite direction of a tooth abscess. However, both are full of pus and infection.

In many cases, a gum abcess can be successfully treated with scaling and root planing and antibiotics. However, if the underlying gum disease is severe, treatment may also involve periodontal surgery or unfortunately, selective dental extraction.
Herbal remedies and home care will not solve this problem and it's very important to seek a knowledgeable dentist.
