Gum Abscess

gum abscess

A gum abscess forms in the gums, not in the bone. It is caused by active periodontal disease and if left untreated, can destroy the underlying bone. This can create a crater and hole in the bone around the teeth and only makes the gum problem worse. It is very important to have professional gum treatment in this situation since it can't be treated just at home.

A gum abscess can form around a living tooth and does not have to involve the bone around the tooth. It starts in the gums and can work itself into the bone. This is the opposite direction of a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is a different type of dental problem. It comes from a dead tooth that gets infected at the tips of its roots. The dental infection starts inside the dental bone and works itself out into the gums.

In many cases, a gum abscess can be successfully treated with scaling and root planing and a dental antibiotic. However, if the underlying gum disease is severe, treatment may also involve periodontal surgery or unfortunately, selective dental extraction. Herbal remedies and home care will not solve this problem and it is very important to seek a dentist.
