Dentists sort gum disease into different stages called Gingivitis, Mild Periodontitis, Moderate Periodontitis and Severe Periodontitis. It is essentially an gum infection in the mouth. It starts off as a slight inflammation that can be relatively easily remedied. If left untreated it can become a very serious problem. This is because it can eventully lead to bone loss and tooth loss.
Gum disease strikes over 80% of Americans over the age of 35. An early sign of problems is bleeding gums. This can happen especially when brushing or flossing. If you find that your gums are bleeding it is important that you see a dentist as soon as possible for evaluation. At first the gums will swell, inflame, and bleed. When the inflammation is limited to the gums it is called Gingivitis. The swelling is due to bacteria that grow on food stuck to your teeth. When this stuff stuck on your teeth is mild its called plaque, but when it builds up severely its called calculus, or tartar.
If left untreated, this mild form of gum disease, whichi is constant inflammation will eventually attack the bone surrounding your teeth. This is the beginning stage of early Periodontitis. This can progress to Moderate and Severe as more and more bone is destroyed surrounding the teeth. Eventually teeth become loose and fall out. This will also affect other teeth, even healthy ones, making them loose as well. A common malady, that will be virtually constant is bad breath ( halitosis) and this can be associated with any stage.
