Gum disease treatment is based on removing the bacterial gum infection which caused the gum disease symptoms. Anything that feeds the infection or protects the offending bacteria must be removed. After removing the bacterial, the patient must be educated on how to perform excellent daily oral home care to prevent the regrowth of these bacteria. Taking care of yourself at home is not only a good idea but it's also cheap! Periodontal treatment takes time, patience and full patient commitment.
One of the first steps in gum disease treatment is to remove all of the calculus from the patient's teeth since bacteria live within the calculus when it is attached to the surface of teeth. This procedure is called scaling and root planing and is performed by a Registered Dental Hygienist, RDH. Since much of this material is underneath the gums, patients are usually numbed before the procedure is performed. It's an effective first step in treating gum disease. We perform this important gum treatment procedure over two visits with one follow up visit to check the results.
The use of a gum infection antibiotic in gum disease treatment is becoming more popular. Antibiotic chips can be inserted underneath the gums and there is even a pill available to help reduce the damage. Extremely loose teeth can be splinted together to provide additional strength and avoid irritating the damaged gum tissues with excessive tooth movements. After initial care, the tissue is evaluated for signs of infection and inflammation. It is very important, however, to fully understand that the diseased teeth and gums must also be properly treated with your gum disease symptoms eliminated.
In some cases, gum disease treatment involves gum surgery. After initial care, if there are large gingival pockets which can trap food, these pockets must be surgically eliminated.
