A
gum graft is a special gum
disease treatment that is meant to increase the amount
of gum tissue around teeth that
have suffered from a receding
gum line. The main purpose of this procedure is to prevent
further loss of gum tissue, which, in turn prevents bone
loss around the teeth, which, can cause tooth
loss. This procedure has an added benefit, the end result
leaves the gums looking beautiful. The procedure can also be known
as a soft tissue graft.
A gum graft
could be made necessary by any number of things. The most common
of these reasons is gum disease.
Trauma to the gums, often caused by heavy brushing, can also cause
gum recession. This can
also be caused by partial dentures
rubbing against the gums. If this is happening it is time for
a dentures reline. Other
reasons include abnormal muscle attachments and overly an prominent
root structure of the tooth.
There are several types of gum graft procedures. The most common, called a free gingival graft uses a small portion of gum tissue from the roof of the mouth to replace the gum tissue lost around the teeth. The gum tissue from the roof of the mouth is removed and then sutured into the area needed. A subepithelial graft is similar to this procedures but uses gum tissue from under the outer layer of the roof of the mouth. A lateral graft uses extra gum tissue adjacent to the receded area, if there is any. The results are not immediate. The new tissue will grow and blend into the graft area over the course of a few weeks.
