Gum Infection Surgery

gum infection surgery

There are different types of gum infection surgery depending on the cause of the problem and the treatment needed. With an acute periodontal infection, a dentist may combine scaling and root planing with open flap curettage to clean out the periodontal tissues of infection and debris. With the cause of the irritation removed, patients are usually placed on antibiotics to help rid them of the bacteria. Without food and with antibiotics attacking them, the bacteria often die off.

Another type of gum infection surgery is needed if there has been significant swelling with gingival overgrowth. The overgrowth causes deep pocketing and the patient can not clean these periodontal pockets. This leads to food entrapment with returning problems. Some patients need a gingivectomy to remove the excess gums. When a gingivectomy is only done in the area of the smile and for cosmetic reasons, it is often called gum contouring.

In severe cases of periodontal disease with damage to the bone, the gum infection surgery that may be needed is osseous surgery. This is where the gums and bone tissues are reshaped and recontoured for to better allow the patient to clean, remove food and avoid inflammation. This procedure is done in the dental office and is generally performed on one or two quadrants of the mouth at a time.
