A common gum infection symptom is gingival swelling. There may or may not be dental pain associated with the swelling. It often depends on whether or not there is drainage associated with the swelling. Much of the discomfort that patients experience is associated with the growing pressure inside the gum boil. Drainage relieves the pressure and decreases the associated pain. However, many patients state that they have a salty taste in their mouths.
Another gum infection symptom is when the color of the gums turn red due to inflammation. Inflammation is usually associated with a gum infection. In almost all cases, there are significant amounts of subgingival calculus underneath the gums. It is important to have scaling and root planing to remove this rock like material which is teaming with growing bacteria. In many cases, a gum infection antibiotic has to be prescribed and taken for a few days before gum infection treatment can be started.
A toothache is often an associated gum infection symptom. Gum disease can progress and destroy the protective layers of surrounding bone and gums leaving the tooth roots badly exposed. At first this causes hot and cold sensitivity but as the destruction continues it can cause severe tooth pain. Eventually the tooth can die and need root canal therapy
