gum pain

There are several sources of gum pain ranging from minor to very serious but regardless of the cause, it should always be investigated, preferably by an experienced dentist. The most common cause of gingival discomfort is gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingiva surrounding the teeth and is often associated with bleeding. In more serious cases, when the gingival tissues hurt, Periodontitis is the reason. Periodontitis is when the inflammation and infection has progressed on to affect the supporting bone.

Gum pain can be caused by an erupting or partially impacted tooth. Either condition can cause irritation or inflammation of the gingiva with associated discomfort, especially with chewing. Food can get caught underneath or around the gingiva, especially popcorn husks. Fortunately, the body usually expels the offending food fragments with a few days.

The most serious source of gum pain is oral cancer. It can start with a minor soreness and progress to an ache in a short period of time, often less than a week. In most cases, there is an oral ulcer that looks nasty and has rolled and thickened boarders. Unfortunately, oral cancer can be confused with minor mouth ulcers such as Herpes Simplex or Apthous ulcers which can also hurt.

Luckily, most causes of gum pain, such as from tooth brushing trauma, are not serious. Others require the attention of a dentist, such as a dental abscess or dental cyst, and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have unexplained dental soreness or tenderness, Dr. Padolsky would be happy to assist you in diagnosing your problem and if necessary, successfully treating the source.
