gum tissue recontouring

Gum tissue recontouring is an excellent cosmetic dentistry procedure. Cosmetic dentistry has become a very important and popular aspect of modern dentistry. The most popular cosmetic procedure is easily cosmetic tooth bleaching. It is a fast, easy and relatively cheap way of dramatically improving your smile. But the effect that the gums can have on a beautiful smile is often overlooked and many people do not care to have gum recontouring done because they do not believe it worth the effort. Those people have never seen the results of such a procedure.

Gum tissue recontouring is exactly what it sounds like. The gums and gum line are altered in order to improve the smile. If there is too much gum tissue or too little in a persons smile it can have a negative effect. A gummy smile looks just as bad as a smile with receding gum line. A receeding gum line is often caused by gum disease. The advanced stages of periodontitis can dramatically reduce the amount of gum tissue in the mouth. While gum recontouring is not an answer to gum disease it can help fix the effects once it has been cured.

The gum tissue recontouring procedure is actually pretty simple and is done in the dental office under local anesthesia. Most dentists use an electrical knife attached to an electrosurgery unit. The tip of the knife cuts away the extra gums and also stops the bleeding by cauterizing the tissue. The cauterized tissue usually heal nicely. In some cases the procedure is needed because of the effects of certain prescription medications. Dilantin, which is given for epilepsy, and Calcium Channel Blockers, for heart disease, can tend to cause excessive growth of the gums and both have the same effect.
