The gums are a vital part of your mouth and their importance is often overlooked when considering the both the beauty of your smile as well as your oral health. Your gum tissue, also called gingiva, play an important role in the system that makes your mouth functional. A mouth is responsible for speaking and eating and to do these properly many different things must all work together. There is a balance to the function of your mouth. Keeping your gums healthy through knowledge and proper gum care will not only improve your oral health but your general health as well.
Your gums are made up of several types of gum tissue, three to be specific. The marginal gingiva is the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth. The attached gingiva and interdental gingiva make up the rest of the gum tissue in the mouth. The gum tissue is naturally transparent but they gain their reddish pink color from the blood flowing through them. If you do not take care of the gums they can be affected by a condition known as periodontal disease. This can cause swollen and bleeding gums, a receding gum line, and eventually tooth loss.
When gum disease affects your gums it affects your whole mouth. The easiest way of dealing with gum disease is simply to prevent it and to do this oral hygiene is essential. Gum disease is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria build up. If you do not lean your teeth properly plaque builds up along the gum line and this can irritate the gums. There are different levels of this disease. Gingivitis a mild form of gum disease, but still serious. Periodontitis is more advanced and very serious.
