Gutta percha is used in dentistry as special filling material for the inside of the tooth when root canal therapy needs to be performed. During a root canal procedure the inside of the tooth is hollowed out by using drills and going in through the crown of the tooth. The whole inside of the tooth is drilled and cleaned out so that any infected material still inside the tooth is removed and the tooth can remain healthy in the future. In order to make the tooth stronger a filling material is left inside the tooth.

        Gutta percha is a rubber-like substance made from the sap of the tree bearing the same name. This tree is indigenous to South East Asia and Australia. The latex formed from it's sap is also a great electrical insulator, it was used to insulate telegraph wires starting in 1845. It has even been used in the construction of golf balls. Unfortunately some people can be allergic the substance and other options must be utilized, but around 90% of root canal therapies in the US use this material.

        Gutta percha is generally comes in preformed cones that fit the same shape and size as the drill bits that the dentist used to hollow out the tooth, that way they fit in perfectly. Usually a sealer is used as well. Getting root canal therapy can help save the functionality of a tooth and avoid the need for dental restorations that can be expensive and run the risk of failure over time but avoiding the need for a root canal is even better. While in some cases this is unavoidable, many cases could have been prevented with simple oral hygiene done properly. Regular visits to the dentist can also help catch any potential problems before they become serious.
