Healthy gums have a surface texture similar to that of an orange. They're firm with a stippled surface and the tissue is resilient with a coral pink color. They naturally flow around the natural dental crowns and form a razor sharp edge while following the contours of the teeth. Good gingiva look beautiful. At times some darker pigmentation can be seen in the gingiva, especially with people of African descent.
Healthy gums do not bleed. This nice surface is lost when the tissues swell due to gingivitis or periodontal disease. The swelling can cause bleeding gums, bad breath and a fire engine red appearance. When a patient has gingivitis, the gingival tissues swell and turn red. They bleed easily because of the gum infection and inflammation. Good gingival health is very important and can possibly prevent heart attacks, strokes and low birth weight babies.
Healthy gums fill all of the spaces between the dental crowns. They form gingival hills called a papillae between the crowns and there are not any black holes between the teeth. In a healthful situation, the gingival tissues symmetrically scallop around the necks of the natural dental crowns. Some of the tissue shows in a nice smile but always a limited amount. What shows should look normal.
Healthy gums do not hurt and normal patients do not notice them. The gums frame a beautiful smile and because of this, they are an important component of creating a gorgeous smile.
