A hemisection is a dental procedure that removes half of the entire tooth structure. "Hemi" means half, so it basically means half a section. This procedure may sound extremely odd but there are reasons this procedure will need to be done. Many people would prefer to keep their natural teeth and this is a good thing for several reasons. First off it is your natural tooth. Secondly, the cost of replacing a tooth either with a bridge or dental implant can be expensive and they run the chance of failure. Treating a tooth can be a great alternative.
A hemisection can only be done on the molars, the wider flatter teeth at the back of your mouth, the other teeth in your mouth simply wouldn't have the stability needed after the procedure. The tooth is cut in half and the crown and root of one side are removed. A dental crown is made that is basically a one tooth bridge to restore the functionality of the tooth.
A hemisection is made necessary when root canal therapy fails. Root canal failure is not as common as it once was due to advances in dental technology that allow for better tools and procedures but unfortunately it can still happen. It can also be used on a tooth when there is a significant vertical fracture in the tooth.
