Immediate Dentures

immediate dentures

Immediate dentures are inserted after all of the patient's teeth are extracted and help the patient avoid being toothless. They act like bandages and reduce bleeding after the surgery and also help healing. The tissues swell into the dentures and fit well right after oral surgery. Because the tissues are bound together, sutures are generally not needed. Because sutures are made of foreign material they can irritate tissue. Since none are uses, these patients usually heal well. The patient must wear the dentures all the time time for a few days or the swelling will prevent the patient from wearing the dentures until the swelling is gone.

The immediate dentures loosen and slip out easily after three to six months since the tooth sockets heal and the gums shrink. During healing, the loose plates are held in with dentures adhesive. After healing, acrylic base is relined to fit better. Some patients later choose to make a new set of dentures that look and feel better.

Many patients are very unhappy with their immediate dentures. They are not tried in the mouth so that the patient never gets to see how the new smile looks until the dentures are inserted after oral surgery. If there are any problems with the color, shape or the arrangement of the teeth, there's no going back.

Our dentists prefer to make inexpensive throw away temporary dentures that have exactly the shape and form of the patient's previous natural teeth. This allows the patient to enjoy the same bite as the natural teeth while wearing the temporary dentures. At the end of the healing, a new set of properly made permanent cosmetic dentures can be made. Since the patient is wearing temporary dentures, as much time as needed is taken to insure that the new dentures are beautiful.
