impacted tooth

An impacted tooth is a tooth that has not erupted properly. Wisdom teeth commonly have this problem and it is part of the reason why wisdom tooth extraction is so important. Impacted teeth can cause numerous oral health problems and should not be ignored or the problems will only grow worse. Not only wisdom teeth become impacted, but they are by far the most common occurrence.

In the case of wisdom teeth an impacted tooth can cause numerous problems. Sometimes a tooth that is impacted will be pressing up against another tooth and this can cause toothache pain. It is also possible that the force generated can press the other teeth into each other and cause orthodontic problems over time. A partially erupted tooth will create a trap for food particles that becomes a festering ground for bacteria that forms plaque and this can cause cavities.

An impacted tooth other than a wisdom tooth is not common but it can happen. When a baby tooth is lost the adult one should come in quickly. Signs of impacted teeth include; discomfort, redness or swelling of the gums, unpleasant taste and even bad breath. The most obvious sign is the lack of a tooth erupting. It is important to make regular visits to your dentist to check your oral health and prevent problems.
