Infected Tooth Extraction

infected tooth extraction

An infected tooth extraction site can occur when a dentist removes a tooth in an area of the mouth that already had an infection before the tooth was removed. Unfortunately, it is the dentist's judgement call because some teeth do need to be removed immediately as part of the treatment to reduce a serious dental infection. In most cases, especially if there is no severe dental pain, a dentist will prescribe a strong dental antibiotic and pain medication and let the infection calm down before doing the oral surgery.

An infected tooth extraction site can occur when the dentist fails to prescribe a dental antibiotic after the tooth extraction. Many physicians and dentists now believe that antibiotics are being overused and the result is that super antibiotic resistant bacteria are developing. They believe that doctors should carefully evaluate every patient and make a decision to prescribe antibiotics based on that patient's particular situation. The Atlanta Dental Group PC dentists believe that we should use every available tool to help our patients avoid serious problems so we prescribe after every tooth surgery procedure.

An infected tooth extraction site can develop if an oral surgery patient continues to bother the healing area. Flushing water and picking at the healing site is not a good idea. It irritates the healing tissues and causes inflammation and possible dental infection. Leave the surgery site alone. You can rinse with warm salted water 24 hours after your oral surgery. This gently cleans the healing area without disturbing the blood clot. Place a teaspoon of table salt in an 8 ounce glass of water and microwave the mixture for about half a minute. The water should be warm to the touch and not boiling hot. For good healing, the clot needs to stay in place for a few days. If you disturb the site, it can bleed, get inflamed and develop a dental infection.
