The interdental brush is designed to clean between the teeth in the area that patients usually floss. The sides of teeth touch at their contact points. From the contact points down to the bone, the sides of the teeth separate and leave an open area. This open area is called the interproximal space. Normally, gum tissue fills this open space below the contact point all the way down to the bone.
The interdental brush is small enough to get between the teeth and underneath the contact point. If it is used correctly and regularly, it can be more effective than flossing. When a patient suffers from periodontal disease, the interproximal bone is lost and the bone and gums recede downwards and away from the contract points. This allows for food to enter into this space and this food sticks to the sides of the teeth. With time, the food hardens to form a rock hard substance called calculus.
An interdental brush can be coated with an antibacterial agent. The brush then delivers the antibacterial to the area it's most needed, the interproximal area where periodontal disease most affects patients. The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC suggest that their periodontal disease patients use PerioMed to kill the bacteria that live around the teeth and inside calculus.
The dentists at the Atlanta Dental Group PC are dedicated to their patients' good health and well being. You are welcome to join our family of patients.
