Invisalign orthodontics is a new method to straighten teeth without metal. A series of clear, removable appliances are used to gradually straighten teeth and it's nearly invisible. You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. An Invisalign patient can eat anything while being treated and is able to brush and floss normally. This isn't possible while wearing traditional braces. There are no metal brackets or wires to cause mouth irritation. Using Invisalign braces also means you spend less adjustment time in the dentist's chair and in some cases a patient only needs to see the dentist half as often as with regular braces.
Invisalign orthodontics uses 3-D computer imaging to simulate the complete treatment plan from which a series of custom appliances are produced. Each appliance moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about 2 weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. Aligners are made of clear, strong plastic that is virtually invisible when worn. An Invisalign dentist may refer to it as "contact lenses for teeth."
Invisalign orthodontics moves teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force on the teeth. The main difference is that it not only controls forces, but also controls the timing of the force application. At each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move and these movements are determined by the Invisalign treatment plan for that particular stage. This results in an efficient force delivery system.
Dental crowns are usually not a factor in Invisalign orthodontics. However, sometimes small composites called attachments are bonded onto teeth to help with certain movements. In these cases, the location of crowns must be carefully evaluated by the dentist.
