Pulpitis is an inflammation of the dental pulp that is inside the tooth. Irreversible pulpitis means that the inflammation has become so severe that the only way to treat the problem is with endodontic therapy (root canal) or tooth extraction. There are two basic forms of pulpitis, acute and chronic. It can also be broken down to reversible and irreversible but these refer to the stages to which the disease has advanced, not the type of pulpitis. But acute pulpitis can be further divided to purulent acute pulpitis and gangrenous acute pulpitis where the pulp begins to die in a less painful manner that can lead into the formation of an abscess.
It is important to state here that irreversible pulpitis occurs only after a progression through reversible pulpitis. Many people do not seek dental treatment at this stage because they are afraid to go to the dentist and choose to ignore the problem. This only makes things worse for your oral health and makes treatment more difficult. Gangrenous acute pulpitis can lead to the formation of a dental abscess, which, can cause it's own difficulties in treating. If you think you have a problem it is best to see the dentist earlier rather than later.
The most common cause of pulpitis is dental caries, otherwise known as cavities. Irreversible pulpitis is caused by the cavities eating through the enamel and into the pulp, causing an infection that grows out of control. This can cause severe toothache pain and it is unlikely that it will get to this stage without you noticing. While cavities are the most common cause of pulpitis there are other possible cause like trauma and even periodontal disease. If you have recently experienced some trauma to a tooth it is a good idea to see your dentist.
