Jaw Clenching

information from the  Atlanta Dental Group PC

jaw clenching

Jaw clenching is done by the jaw muscles, especially the masseters (beaver muscles). Over the years the jaw muscles can grow and the sides of the face enlarge. Others see the jaw muscle repeatedly bulge on the sides of the clencher's face. However, most clenchers are not aware of it.

Jaw clenching patients do not grind their teeth away. However, the overworked jaw muscles can become tender and painful leading to TMJ headaches and jaw pain. The causes can be complex with many combined reasons . Many jaw clenchers have TMJ irregularies with assymetrical faces and jaws. The tremendous force placed on the teeth can cause tooth fractures requiring dental crowns or root canals.

Jaw clenching and bruxism are different, although many people think they're the same. In jaw clenching, the clencher bites hard, keeps biting and locks together without moving. The continued pressure of biting can harm teeth by overloading them. It is common for clenchers and bruxers to have loose teeth.
