Jaw soreness could be a symptom of many different oral health problems or even physical trauma. Some of these problems could be quite minor while others are relatively significant. It could be a symptom of tooth grinding, TMJ dysfunction, cavities, wisdom tooth eruption, sinusitis or trauma to the jaw. If you are experiencing any discomfort of the jaw you should speak with your dentist immediately.
Jaw soreness is often caused by tooth grinding. Tooth grinding, called bruxism by medical professionals, is a habit that can destroy not only your teeth, but your oral health as well. Tooth grinding can occur during the day but is particularly common, and dangerous, at night. When people grind their teeth at night they are completely unaware of it and the only way they might learn about it is if their partner notices it. Bruxism wears down the enamel of the teeth, often causing fractured teeth and tooth abfractions. These can in turn cause other problems like receding gums and tooth loss.
Jaw soreness is a common symptom of Temporo-mandibular joint Dysfunction. TMJD is a disorder that is largely misunderstood. Many dentists disagree about what causes TMJD and how it should be treated and therefore many patients find a great deal of difficulty in treatment. Much of the soreness of the jaw caused by TMJD comes from jaw muscles that are over-strained. The muscles are trying to correct the bite and becomes stressed, causing pain and spasming.
Jaw soreness can also be caused by a toothache causing pain that is not localized. Toothaches can be caused by any number of oral health problems. Cavities are a common cause of toothache pain but not he only cause, pulpitis, orthodontic problems or even food stuck in between the teeth can cause pain. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that can cause gum recession, tooth loss, bleeding gums and yes even pain. If you are experiencing jaw soreness you should speak with a dentist immediately.
