Loose Adult Tooth

loose adult tooth

It's common for children's teeth to get loose and fall out, but a loose adult tooth is a sign something is seriously wrong because teeth should be firmly embedded in supporting bone. Several things can cause this but regardless of the cause, the problem must be treated to prevent further problems

The usual reason for a loose adult tooth is loss of the supporting bone around the tooth because of periodontal disease. As the bone melts away the tooth can no longer be held in its bone. If the tooth is so loose that it bothers a patient, the loose adult tooth can be bonded to a healthy tooth to prevent movement. It is very important to prevent further damage and the first step in doing this is scaling and root planing. After this initial gum treatment, the tissue and bone are reevaluated.

Another reason for a loose adult tooth is from an accident and/or trauma. It is extremely important to visit a dentist immediately after an accident. The dentist can often reposition the tooth in its original position and hold it in place using bonding. You can also develop this from tooth grinding.
