maxillary sinus

The maxilla is the name for of the upper jaw. A sinus is an open cavity inside the body. The maxillary sinus is in the upper jaw just above the teeth and lateral to the nose. It drains into the nose though a hole located about half way up the side of the sinus wall facing the nose. If the hole into the nose become blocked then the cavity fills up with liquid and gets infected. This can cause your teeth to hurt and a dull aching pain under your cheeks. Many patients go to their dentist because their teeth hurt. These infections usually make all of the back teeth hurt instead of just one tooth so a knowledgeable dentist often become suspicious.

There are many different types of antibiotics used to treat a maxillary sinus infection but our doctors in our dental practice usually prescribe tetracycline 500 mg four times a day for ten days. This is an unusual prescription because most antibiotics are taken only for 7 days but the antibiotic treatment of the maxillary sinus often needs more time than normal since there are no blood vessels inside the sinus. Additionally, tetracycline has fallen out of use because it makes teeth that are forming yellow. However, with adults, no teeth are forming and it's okay for an adult to take tetracycline.

Modern dental implant procedures use techniques to add bone to the base of the maxillary sinus. This is called the sinus lift bone augmentation procedure. By adding bone to the bottom of the sinus, the dentist increase the bone above the mouth. The increased bone allows for larger more successful dental implants to be placed.
