Missing Tooth

missing tooth

If you have a missing tooth, it's important to fix it as soon as possible because the tooth gap can cause a dental problem. Many people only have a baby tooth with no adult tooth underneath. Eventually the baby tooth will fall out and leave an open gap. If left untreated, open gaps can be detrimental to your health. They can cause orthodontic problems that are difficult and expensive to fix. They will also cause bone loss due to lack of function which can affect the way your face looks. Whether the tooth was lost in accident, a lack of oral hygiene or other causes, it's important to fill in the missing space before problems occur.

A missing tooth can be replaced many ways. A tooth implant is usually the best solution although it's usually the most expensive. Implants can prevent bone loss because of the way they bond with the jaw bone. They are also the strongest and longest lasting solution. Implants do not put stress on other teeth the way dental bridges do. An implant often offers the best cosmetic appeal. A dental implant is often impossible to distinguish from the adjacent natural teeth. Bridges and partial dentures can help fill a space but each has drawbacks.

If you have a missing tooth due to an accident, the avulsed tooth can often be reimplanted. Pick it up by the crown, not the roots, and rinse it quickly with milk or water. If you can put it back in the tooth socket, do it, but only after the root is clean. Otherwise, put the tooth in a container of milk to keep it from drying out and see a dentist immediately. The sooner you see a dentist, the better the chances of success. In many cases, the tooth can successfully be reinserted and bonded to the adjacent teeth for support.
