Molar Extraction

molar extraction

A molar extraction differs from the removal other teeth. A molar crushes food and has a large biting surface and several roots to heavily anchor it into the jaw. The bone surrounding a molar tooth is often developed and hardened to sustain these forces. These roots are often spread out in different directions which requires the tooth to be sectioned into several individual parts to be removed.

A molar extraction may be necessary due to extensive decay, crown or root fracture, or due to severe periodontal disease. Second molars are occasionally removed for orthodontic purposes but new orthodontic techniques are available to avoid second molar extractions. The most common is the wisdom or third molar extraction. Most people do not have the room in their mouths to allow their wisdom teeth to properly fit inside the dental arch.

Most molar extraction procedures are routine and go very well. The removal is usually done under local anaesthesia and is not painful. The patient only feels some pushing and pulling, not pain. In most cases, a narcotic analgesic and antibiotic are prescribed to reduce post operative pain and prevent subsequent infection.
