Mouth gum disease is a problem in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of people have it after age 35. It's an infection that occurs under the gums and progresses to the supporting bone around the teeth. At first, there's just bleeding. However, spontaneous bleeding is a sign that something is wrong. The bleeding comes from the inflammation and swelling associated with the dental infection.
If left untreated, mouth gum disease can cause receding gums and lots of medical problems. The dental infection can enter the body through the gums and spread into the body. This causes the body to fight but many bad things can happen during the fight. Patients with periodontal infections have higher rates of heart attack and stroke. Pregnant women tend to have low birth weight and pre-term babies. It's not good.
Mouth gum disease can be treated, especially early. Scaling and root planing is almost always the most important initial treatment. This procedure removes the food that has collected under the gums and stuck on the teeth. With the food and tartar removed, there's nothing there to feed the bacteria that are causing the infection so the gums can heal. After this treatment, the tissues are re-evaluated to determine how much they have healed and if addtional treatment is necessary.
