Mouth thrush is basically a mouth infection of the fungus Candida albicans, which is basically yeast, in the mouth. Candida is always present in the mouth, but when the balance is upset and it grows too much it is known as oral thrush. It is common in babies and people who wear dentures. It is relatively easy to treat but with adults it must also be determined why the balance was upset in order to prevent it from happening again.
Mouth thrush symptoms include lesions in the mouth that are usually on the tongue or inner cheeks, dry mouth, discomfort, or a creamy white film in the mouth that may look like cottage cheese. The lesions can be easily brushed away but leave a bleeding sore. In adults there is often an uncomfortable burning sensation in the mouth as well as the throat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is a good idea to schedule a dental examination as soon as possible.
While mouth thrush is more common in babies, adults who have diabetes or wear dentures are particularly susceptible. Dental treatment of thrush generally involves antifungal medications like clotrimazole, miconazol and enystatin which are taken for around a week. A medicine called Diflucan can also be used if these treatments do not work and is only taken once. If the problem is reoccurring it will be absolutely necessary to diagnose the cause in order to prevent it from happening again. There could be a much more serious underlying medical cause.
