mouth yeast infection

A mouth yeast infection is a type of dental infection caused by the Candida albicans fungus, which is basically yeast, in the mouth. Candida is always present in the mouth, but when the balance between the yeast and competing bacteria is upset the candida grows too much. This is known as oral thrush. It is common in babies and people who wear dentures. It is relatively easy to treat but in adults the reason for the disturbance must also be determined to prevent it from happening again.

Mouth yeast infection symptoms include lesions in the mouth that are usually on the tongue or inner cheeks, dry mouth, discomfort, or a creamy white film in the mouth that may look like cottage cheese. Candida lesions can be easily brushed away but usually leave a bleeding sore. In adults there is often an uncomfortable burning mouth sensation and also in the throat as well. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is a good idea to schedule a dental examination as soon as possible.

While mouth yeast infection is more common in babies, adults who have diabetes or wear dentures are particularly susceptible. Diabetes and dental health are linked. Treatment of oral thrush generally involves antifungal medications like clotrimazole, miconazol and enystatin which are taken for about a week. A medicine called Diflucan can also be used if these treatments do not work and Diflucan is only taken once. If the problem recurs, it is absolutely necessary to diagnose the cause in order to prevent it from happening again.
