A burning tongue or a burning mouth are both irritating conditions that have several different causes. A sore tongue is often less painful and less serious. Geographic tongue causes unsual patches on the tongue that move around and change shape but is usually a painless problem, however, it does not always cause a swollen tongue. A scalloped tongue or tongue groove has indentations on the sides of the tongue. A black tongue has a black stained coating which usually scrapes off easily. A tongue bite can often make these problems much worse. However, tongue biting can often be difficult to control. A swollen taste bud does not often develop into a bump on tongue which is much more serious and could be a sign of early tongue cancer.

Post nasal drip causes blood to stick to the surfaces of the throat causing a metallic taste in mouth. However, there are many other causes for a bad taste in the mouth.

Many patients are concerned about mercury filling materials and mercury poisoning symptoms. Another concern is the possibility of a heart attack from a dental infection caused by not using antibiotic prophylaxis during a dental procedure. A sinus toothache can cause tooth pain and tooth sensitivity which can not be eliminated with a home remedy for a toothache.
