Orthodontic Bracket

orthodontic bracket

An orthodontic bracket is a small piece of metal, generally stainless steel, that is an essential part of orthodontic braces. This part is so essential because it is the one part that actually attaches to the tooth, and then to the archwire, that goes across the mouth and actually realigns the teeth. For those who want to forgo the trouble of traditional braces, clear braces such as Invisalign do not use such brackets, but use clear aligner trays.

An orthodontic bracket is attached to a tooth through a process known as bonding. This starts with an etching agent being applied to the teeth in order to clean and prepare the surface of the tooth. The etching agent is generally a weak acid. The tooth is then rinsed and sealed before the bracket is applied. Once the orthodontic bracket placement is properly aligned a curing light is used and the bonding agent will then firmly adhere the bracket to the tooth. Once this has been done to al the teeth, the archwire can be attached using a ligating module, which, is really just a very small rubber band.

An orthodontic bracket can be as annoying as it is ugly. Modern advances in dental technology have given us lingual or "shell" braces that actually allow a patient to undergo orthodontic treatment with anyone ever noticing it. This is a particularly useful option for adult braces or teen braces. With adult orthodontics particually the demands of an adult social life can make wearing braces very difficult. This type of braces also allows for proper oral hygiene, something that can become quite difficult with traditional braces due to the fact that there is so much covering the places that need to be cleaned.
