Pain After Tooth Extraction

pain after tooth extraction

The best way to avoid pain after tooth extraction is for the dentist to perform the tooth extraction procedure gently and not insult the oral tissues. However, even with the best of care and skill, some patients do experience problems after their oral surgery. Dentists and their patients are all human beings. No one can be a hundred percent certain of their results because no one is perfect. That's why we say that dentists and physicians practice their profession.

Some of the pain after tooth extraction can be reduced or eliminated with narcotic analgesics. Tylenol Number 3 or Vicodin 5 milligrams are often very effective in controlling post tooth extraction discomfort. Eating well and relaxing is also very important. Oddly enough, if you do not take your antibiotics, an infection can develop that contributes to the discomfort. It is important not to fool around with the surgery site. Let it heal. Rinse with warm salted water after twenty four hours. If you rinse too early before the clot has fully formed, you can start bleeding again.

In some cases, pain after tooth extraction is due to a dry socket. Fortunately, a dry socket does not happen very often but when it does, it's painful. A dry socket happens when blood fails to bleed into the socket and fails to form a clot to fill the socket up. This is one good reason to keep incisions as small as possible to insure that the blood supply to the tooth socket is maintained.
