The parotid gland is the largest of all the salivary glands and is located on the side of the face in front and just below the ear. Its name comes from the Greek para meaning beside and ous meaning ear since the gland is beside the ear. Each of us has one on each side of the face and they can significantly swell up with the mumps. This viral infection is more professionally called mumps parotitis since there's a great deal of inflammation.
The parotid makes saliva which aids in digestion of food. The saliva moves from this large gland through a duct and out into the mouth on the inside of the cheek. The duct exits the cheeks in front of the second maxillary molar. The saliva is serous meaning that it flows easily and in a healthy gland, the saliva can be milked from the opening of the duct. It is possible for this duct to become blocked with salivary stones or due to compression. The result is that the gland swells.
