Partials

In dentistry the term partials refers to partial dentures. These are a set of dentures made to replace only a few missing teeth. Other alternatives include, dental implants and a dental bridges. They can be a good idea if you recently lost a few teeth and are feeling self-conscious. If you did just lose a few teeth it is important to have something done as soon as possible. It is important to have a tooth opposing each other tooth, because a mouth must be balanced. Over time a tooth opposite an empty space could become loose and work its way out. It is normal for dentures to feel awkward the first few weeks you wear them, but as with many things, patients generally become accustomed to them.

Partials are traditionally made using metal fasteners, which means special care must be taken with them, especially when cleaning. Small holes are drilled into surrounding teeth and the partial uses these holes as anchors for the false teeth. Newer and more expensive dental partials can be made without this unsightly metal. A partial is removable just like normal dentures and should always be worn during waking hours. It is important to clean dentures and partials should be maintained just as normal dentures, with special care being taken not to tarnish the metal clasps. Tell your dentist if the denture isn’t fitting as well as it used to be, it may be time for a dentures reline.

Getting partials made generally requires around three or four appointments. The first involves a complete dental examination. The dentures are made by the third appointment, which is meant to adjust the fitting. During the fourth appointment your dentures dentist will fine tune the fit and you'll walk home with your new set of dentures. You may need follow up appointments to see how well you are adjusting to the new dentures, but those are only scheduled as needed.
